Its first booklet, which existed independently manuscript’s other eight booklets throughout much or all its medieval life, contains three texts: tail-rhyme burlesque romance The Hunting Hare, mock sermon in prose, alliterative nonsense verse Battle Brackonwet. In this light, comic, crude, sometimes frivolous contents take on new significance history literature, as they provide close evidence for what made up entertainments oral culture—or minstrelsy—at end Middle Ages.
